Number and Calculation Skills

This section builds confidence in using whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and percentages in everyday contexts. Learners will master the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division), learn to round numbers, estimate solutions, and work with ratios and proportions. Emphasis is placed on practical applications—such as calculating discounts, managing budgets, comparing prices, and understanding interest rates—ensuring learners can apply maths confidently in real-life situations like shopping, banking, or managing household expenses.

Measures, Shape and Space

Learners will develop the ability to use and convert between metric and imperial units (e.g., grams to kilograms, miles to kilometres) and apply measurement skills to solve problems involving time, money, length, weight, capacity, and temperature. The course also covers geometry: calculating area, perimeter, and volume of common shapes (like rectangles, triangles, and cuboids), interpreting scale drawings, and understanding basic properties of 2D and 3D shapes. These skills are essential for tasks ranging from DIY projects to reading timetables and planning journeys.

 Handling Data and Probability

This component teaches learners to collect, organise, represent, and interpret data using tables, charts, and graphs (such as bar charts, pie charts, and line graphs). They will calculate averages (mean, median, mode) and range, compare data sets, and draw meaningful conclusions. The course also introduces basic probability—understanding likelihood (e.g., “likely,” “unlikely,” or numerical probability) and using it to make informed decisions. These skills support critical thinking in contexts like reading news statistics, evaluating survey results, or assessing risk in daily life.
