1. Understanding the Role of a Teaching Assistant in School Settings

This course begins by exploring the vital role of teaching assistants (TAs) within primary and secondary schools. Learners will understand how TAs support teachers in planning, delivering, and assessing lessons while promoting a positive, inclusive, and safe learning environment. Emphasis is placed on professional boundaries, confidentiality, safeguarding responsibilities (including the Prevent Duty and child protection policies), and working as part of a wider school team. The unit also covers the importance of equality, diversity, and inclusion—ensuring every child, regardless of background or ability, receives the support they need to thrive.

2. Supporting Children’s Development, Learning, and Wellbeing

Learners will gain in-depth knowledge of child development from ages 5 to 16, including physical, cognitive, social, and emotional growth. The course teaches practical strategies to support pupils with diverse needs—such as those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), English as an Additional Language (EAL), or behavioural challenges. It also covers how to assist with literacy and numeracy activities, manage classroom resources, encourage independence, and promote positive behaviour using school-specific policies. Additionally, learners will understand how to support children’s mental health, resilience, and overall wellbeing through empathetic and consistent practice.

3. Professional Practice and Reflective Development

The final focus is on developing professional competence through supervised school placement (a minimum of 50 hours is typically required). Learners will apply their knowledge in real classroom settings, working under the guidance of qualified teachers and assessors. They will learn to reflect on their practice using feedback, self-evaluation, and the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) or National Curriculum frameworks where relevant.
